Its bad news for the teachers and other public servants in Kenya as they will have to wait for two more years to receive any salary increment.
As the salaries and remuneration commission told a parliamentary committee,they had held off any salary reviews until a public service job evaluation is completed in the next 24 months.
“We expect to be done in two years,” SRC Vice-Chairman Daniel Ogutu told the National Assembly’s Finance Committee on Wednesday, during a session at Continental House, Nairobi.
The issue about salary hike has been like a thorn in the flesh for the commission in the wake of strikes from right left and center demanding a raise.Last year teachers took to the streets rallying for more allowances.
When the committee question the long period that the evaluation will take,the commission explained that they would complete data collection in February, next year, but it would still have more work to do, including analysis of the data which will help gauge the proper remuneration for public servants.
On another note the SRC chairperson, Mrs Sarah Serem went on to assure Kenyans that no public servant would be laid off due to the evaluation and that it would help in addressing the disparities in the public sector.
“The aim of the job evaluation is to determine the comparable and relative worth of the jobs and to provide an objective criteria for management of remuneration,” explained the SRC boss.
